I read up on that process but it unfortunately wouldn't work for the concept. Anyone who needs to be forced to get out of bed is just going to dismiss it... Alarmy is rather large and they absolutely pop the application somehow from an inactive state, so there must be some approved way to do it right?

I'll try. Been doing testing and see very strange behavior, logic in applicationDidEnterBackground seems to be able to indefinitely trigger (had an infinite loop with sleep(1) ) and it just kept going well past the 15seconds or 3 minute's i've seen referenced, so I'm at a loss on what actually works / doesn't work, everything is so unclear with apple when doing anything different...
