This sounds exactly like my scenario, except on a iMac Retina 5k 4-core i7. Literally *nothing* else open on the system except the time machine backup was in progress.

My iMac Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2017 also crashes after installing Big Sur 11.0.1 (20B50).
Havn't used the computer much but it crashes on wake after sleep.

2 more crashes this week. Does Apple monitor this site or is the site a place for developers to try and help developers. I'm not sure how developers would help with MacOS crash issues. Do I need to post somewhere else?

I'm getting the same crashes I believe, on 16" i9 Macbook Pro. 5-10 crashes per day currently. The OS is a joke. Makes me miss Windows ME.

Read elsewhere that someone got some reprieve from the issue by deleting AVG / Avast. Does anyone have that installed here?

Since i bought iMac 27' 2020 a month ago I have the same problem, I thought it would be solved by going to Big Sur and clean installation but the problem persists and still once every 1-3 days iMac restarts....

I'm seeing the same thing to the point I'm trying to figure out what is causing this so I can submit feedback. I'm currently running Big Sur Beta 11.1 and have the ability to submit feedback to the developers if I actually could understand what application is causing the crash. This log that it auto generates sounds like gibberish. Would be helpful if it actually told you what this was a little clearer to us non computer programers. If anyone knows how to read this a little to tell me what caused this I will submit it.

More than likely a peripheral....I've had the same issue with an external HD...was able to get that fixed. Also had my 4K television hooked up prior to the Big Sur release and it was working fine. After the release it froze 10-14 times a day or crashed. Unplugged the monitor and now it is fine.

Having a computer that's designed to work with peripherals such as ext. monitor,TV, ext HD etc to only work stably when those items are NOT connected is INSANE on the part of Apple and its apparently flawed macOS BigSur

I had the same issue after upgrading to Big Sur. Computer would crash every five minutes with no applications running (just sitting idle).

Apple walked me through the following steps.

• Boot into Safe Mode and see if computer crashes (it did eventually)

• Create a new user account and see if the computer crashes (it did)

These didn't solve my problem, but may be helpful for others. Eventually, I needed to boot into Internet Recover mode (Shift-Command-R), erase hard drive, reformat hard drive, and re-install Big Sur. Once I did that, the problem was resolved. A radical solution, but it worked. Apple was very helpful in resolving this problem. On the positive side, a new install was a nice refresh and my laptop runs faster. Luckily, I had all my data files in my Apple iCloud Drive.

I have that issue too. I am loosing whole screen no cursor just block white or grey or flashy screen. Force restart from power button than get these watchdog crash reports when boots.

I'm running Big Sur 11.1 and I have the same issue as well. I recently reinstalled the OS (not a clean install but just the OS via Repair Mode), thinking that would fix it. But just crashed again.

It seems I have the exact same problem. Everything, including the cursor, freezes on a daily basis, waits for a couple of minutes, and the I get the Apple equivalent of BSOD.

I send the crash report to apple regularly, but they don't get back in touch, so I thought I would just share my version of the same crash report here.

I am very willing to try and uninstall anything that might be the causing the issue, but so far nothing has worked, and I suspect it is an error in the OS. It never happened before in the years I have had my mac, but started with the "upgrade" to Big Sur.

Same here, iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2017), 3,8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5, 24 GB 2400 MHz DDR4, Fusion Drive.

This started on Catalina for me and continuous on Big Sur. Freezes up and panics after few minutes. Happens when in Safari (I have tons of tabs), but also when dragging & dropping in the finder, and even during the night when the computer sleeps.

I did a clean Big Sur install, not by choice but my HDD part of the Fusion Drive happened to die recently. I thought the panics were related to that but new HDD drive and fresh Big Sur install (with migration assistant from backup for files & settings but fresh apps) and the problem persists and possibly even worse. Anyone else has a fusion drive? I noticed in DriveDX that the SSD part of the drive is also aging to 20% of lifetime. And since everyone seems to be on similar hardware I'm wondering if it has to do with Fusion Drive.

Same here on what is/was a clean Big Sur install. I've lost count now of how many times this has happened. I wake my 2018 Mac Mini from sleep and once again I'm logging in and it's reopened applications and I'm seeing another crash report. I was hoping 11.1 would fix this issue, but nope. I've been on Mac as my primary OS since 2007 and have never seen anything like this w/ any Mac release. I can't remember the last time my Win10 machine hard crashed.

I´ve had the same issues that this thread has for a couple of months now, and have tapped AppleCare several times; their recommendations match those steps several have taken in the below discussion.

On my (high-spec) iMac Pro 2017 I believe I have isolated the source of the problem: my two external Dell 5k monitors (Thunderbolt/USB-C). That tallies up well with other forum comments elsewhere.

The issue arose post Catalina and has continued with Big Sur (currently Big Sur 11.1).

The kernel panic crash happens either when I put the iMac to sleep without first turning off the two external monitors. Furthermore, the whole OS freezes (cursor and all) occasionally when stepping away from the computer - completely unresponsive.

These issues do not occur when the two external monitors are turned off.

Apple - please review and correct your OS...

Had the same issue with a 2017 iMac Pro, random restarts running Big Sur 11.1 same crash logs as everyone else on this thread. Thought it might be related to running two extra monitors off the iMac, however I can't understand why it was fine for weeks and then started to crash for last couple of days. Whilst I don't have good news relating to some software fix, I can report that I successfully wiped the drive, fresh installed Catalina and the best news, was able to restore my Big Sur backup from earlier today. This downgrade was not possible to do previous to Big Sur. So either Apple foresaw the need to allow restoring a time machine backup to an earlier Mac OS due to the newness of Big Sur or I've had some miracle performed and should buy a lotto ticket before my luck runs out.

So just keep in mind there may be a downgrade path for you using Time Machine and this definitely was not possible to perform with the last few releases of Mac OS.

Crash 2 to 4 times a day. I reinstalled Big Sur remains the same. Big Sur disappointment ....

Same issue here. I have done tons of trouble shooting over the past few weeks and am very certain it is connected to external hard drives. On Catalina the issue even resulted in catastrophic crashes that rebooted in Internet Recovery mode to reinstall everything and wipe the drive.

I have two external drives connected. One is APFS one is Journaled.

It happens on two different machines for me when having the same hard drives connected. No external drives, no problem. Would love to see this fixed.
