In the official documentation, the orientation of the eyes is determined by the center of the eyeball and the pupil.

Is the position of the pupil extracted from the image?

Is an infrared sensor also used to extract the position of the pupil?

I would be surprised there is a specific IR sensor for pupil. AFAIU, it is just image extraction. And that's why probably doc states about left and rightPupil :

This value may be inaccurate if the eye is blinking.
