For xcode development, is the new macbook pro m1 pro 16gb good ? Or do I need 32 gb?

So, I need to know if the 16gb is enough for xcode development. Or I have to choose the 32gb? What I execute/open when I develop:

  • xcode
  • vsc
  • ios simulator
  • android emulator
  • a few window of terminal
  • one chrome window with so many tabs
  • notes
  • figma

Thanks.

You know the new M1 Pro/Max is not out yet, so you cannot find any actual experiences here as for now.

But, in the era of Intel, Xcode is known as a tremendous memory eater. I would not expect too much about new behavior on M1.

I would choose 32 GB or more for my dev machine.

16GB is enough, but I'd personally suggest upgrading to 32GB (or 64!) if you can afford it. Like OOPer mentioned, Xcode and the simulator use a lot of RAM, so it can be beneficial to have more than 16GB. Also, think about how long you plan to keep your laptop, since you might want to have more than 16GB in a few years. For what it's worth, I have a 16GB M1 iMac that I use for development and it works pretty well.

I agree with what most have said, aim for the 32GB if you want to keep your development machine for a long time. I have a 2020 M1 and unfortunately I made the mistake of getting 8GB of ram. At first it was fine development small projects, but once the project started getting large I saw a noticeable declined in speed.
