I built a SwiftData App that relies on CloudKit to synchronize data across devices.
That means all model relationships must be expressed as Optional.
That’s fine, but there is a limitation in using Optional’s in SwiftData SortDescriptors (Crashes App)
That means I can’t apply a SortDescriptor to ModelA using some property value in ModelB (even if ModelB must exist)
I tried using a computed property in ModelA that referred to the property in ModelB, BUT THIS DOESN”T WORK EITHER!
Am I stuck storing redundant data In ModelA just to sort ModelA as I would like???

I'm building a macOS + iOS SwiftUI app using Xcode 14.1b3 on a Mac running macOS 13.b11. The app uses Core Data + CloudKit.
With development builds, CloudKit integration works on the Mac app and the iOS app. Existing records are fetched from iCloud, and new records are uploaded to iCloud. Everybody's happy.
With TestFlight builds, the iOS app has no problems. But CloudKit integration isn't working in the Mac app at all. No existing records are fetched, no new records are uploaded.
In the Console, I see this message:

Some users of my app are reporting total loss of data while using the app.

When user clicks on Toggle to enable/disable iCloud sync I just set the description.cloudKitContainerOptions to nil and then user is asked to restart the app.

Here is what I thought
I want to give each user a unique container, when the user login or register, the user could isolate their data in specific container.
I shared the container in a singleton actor, I found it's possible to update the container in that actor.
But I think it won't affect the modelContext which is in the Environment.
Does SwiftData allow me or recommend to do that?

Size Limit: 200 GB
Asset Pack Count: 100
I'm expecting I will need ~175 Asset Packs and around 500GB of storage.
I understand Background Assets is a new, but is there a process or a potential that these limits will be increased in the future? Or is there a way to request an increase?

I have a simple app that makes an HTTPS call to gather some JSON which I then parse and add to my SwiftData database. The app then uses a simple @Query in a view to get the data into a list.
on iOS 16 this works fine. No problems. But the same code on iOS 26 (targeting iOS 18.5) crashes after about 15 seconds of idle time after the list is populated. The error message is:
Could not cast value of type '__NSCFNumber' (0x1f31ee568) to 'NSString' (0x1f31ec718).
and occurs when trying to access ANY property of the list.
I have a stripped down version of the app that shows the crash available.
To replicate the issue:
open the project in Xcode 26
target any iOS 26 device or simulator
compile and run the project.
after the list is displayed, wait about 15 seconds and the app crashes.
It is also of note that if you try to run the app again, it will crash immediately, unless you delete the app from the device.
Any help on this would be appreciated.

Hi everyone!
I have an app on the App Store that uses Core Data as its data store. (It's called Count on Me: Tally Counter. Feel free to check it out.) One of the app's core feature is an interactive widget with a simple button. When the button is tapped, it's supposed to update the entity in the store.
My requirement is that the changes are then reflected with minimal latency in the main app and – ideally – also on other devices of the same iCloud user. And vice-versa: When an entity is updated in the app (or on another device where the same iCloud user is logged in), the widget that shows this entity should also refresh to reflect the changes.
I have read multiple articles, downloaded sample projects, searched Stackoverflow and the Apple developer forums, and tried to squeeze a solution out of AI, but couldn't figure out how to make this work reliably.
So I tried to reduce the core problem to a minimal example project. It has two issues that I cannot resolve:
When I update an entity in the app, the widget is immediately updated as intended (due to a call to WidgetCenter's reloadAllTimelines method). However, when I update the same entity from the interactive widget using the same app intent, the changes are not reflected in the main app.
For the widget and the app to use the same local data store, I need to enable App Groups in both targets and set a custom location for the store within the shared app group. So I specify a custom URL for the NSPersistentStoreDescription when setting up the Core Data stack. The moment I do this, iCloud sync breaks.
Issue no. 1 is far more important to me as I haven't officially enabled iCloud sync yet in my real app that's already on the App Store. But it would be wonderful to resolve issue no. 2 as well. Surely, there must be a way to synchronize changes to the source of truth triggered by interactive widget with other devices of the same iCloud user. Otherwise, the feature to talk to the main app and the feature to synchronize with iCloud would be mutually exclusive.
Some other developers I talked to have suggested that the widget should only communicate proposed changes to the main app and once the main app is opened, it processes these changes and writes them to the NSPersistentCloudKitContainer which then synchronizes across devices. This is not an option for me as it would result in a stale state and potential data conflicts with different devices. For example, when a user has the same widget on their iPhone and their iPad, taps a button on the iPhone widget, that change would not be reflected on the iPad widget until the user decides to open the app on the iPhone. At the same time, the user could tap the button multiple times on their iPad widget, resulting in a conflicting state on both devices. Thus, this approach is not a viable solution.
An answer to this question will be greatly appreciated. The whole code including the setup of the Core Data stack is included in the repository reference above. Thank you!

In my iOS/SwiftUI/SwiftData app, I want the user to be able to hit [Cancel] from editing in a detail screen and return to the previous screen without changes being saved.
I believed that setting autosaveEnabled to false and/or calling .rollback would prevent changes from being saved, unless/until I call .save() when the user clicks [Save], but this does not seem to be correct.
I set modelContext.autosaveEnabled = false and I call modelContext.rollback() when the user hits [Cancel], but any changes they made are not rolled back, but saved even if I don’t call save().
I have tried setting autosaveEnabled to false when I create the ModelContainer on a @MainActor function when the App starts, and in the detail/edit screen’s .onAppear(). I can see that .rollback is being called when the [Cancel] button is tapped. In all cases, any changes the user made before hitting [Cancel] are saved.
The Developer Documentation on autosaveEnabled includes this:
“The default value is false. SwiftData automatically sets this property to true for the model container’s mainContext."
I am working on the mainContext, but it appears that setting autosaveEnabled to false has no effect no matter where in the code I set it.
If someone sees what I am doing wrong, I’d sure appreciate the input. If this description doesn’t explain the problem well enough, I’ll develop a minimal focused example.
Since publishing new record types to my CloudKit schema in production, a previously unchanged record type has stopped indexing new records.
While records of this type are successfully saved without errors, they are not returned in query results—they can only be accessed directly via their recordName. This issue occurs exclusively in the Production environment, both in the CloudKit Console and our iOS app.
The problem began on July 21, 2025, and continues to persist. The issue affects only new records of this specific record type; all other types are indexing and querying as expected.
The affected record's fields are properly configured with the appropriate index types (e.g., QUERYABLE) and have been not been modified prior to publishing the schema.
With this, are there any steps I should take to restore indexing functionality for this record type in Production? There have been new records inserted, and I would prefer to not have to reset the production database, if possible.

I'm using CoreData + CloudKit and I am facing the following error 134100 "The managed object model version used to open the persistent store is incompatible with the one that was used to create the persistent store."
All my schema updates are composed of adding optional attributes to existing entities, adding non-optional attributes (with default value) to existing entities or adding new entities Basically, only things that lightweight migrations can handle.
Every time I update the schema, I add a new model version of xcdatamodel - who only has a single configuration (the "Default" one). And I also deploy the updated CloudKit schema from the dashboard.
It worked up to v3 of my xcdatamodel, but started to crash for a few users at v4 when I added 16 new attributes (in total) to 4 existing entities.
Then again at v5 when I added 2 new optional attributes to 1 existing entity.

Hello there, I have a problem reaching the CloudKit dashboard. Every time I login, the login successes but then I get the error: An error has caused this web page to stop working correctly. This also happens when I click on the Button CloudKit dashboard. Then I can reload the page, but the same errors occurs again and again. Can someone help me with this problem?

I am using NSPersistentCloudKitContainer and I decided to add a property to an entity. I accidentally ran try! container.initializeCloudKitSchema(options: []) while using the production container in Xcode (com.apple.developer.icloud-container-environment) which throw a couple of errors and created some FAKE_ records in my production container.
So I changed to my development container and ran the try! container.initializeCloudKitSchema(options: []) and now it succeeded.
After that I cleaned up the FAKE_ records scattered in production container but in Xcode when I'm running I now get these logs in the console (and I can't seem to get rid of them):

When my app starts it loads data (of vehicle models, manufacturers, ...) from JSON files into CoreData. This content is static.
Some CoreData entities have fields that can be set by the user, for example an isFavorite boolean field.
How do I tell CloudKit that my CoreData objects are 'static' and must not be duplicated on other devices (that will also load it from JSON files).
In other words, how can I make sure that the CloudKit knows that the record created from JSON for vehicle model XYZ on one device is the same record that was created from JSON on any other device?
I'm using NSPersistentCloudKitContainer.
My project is using swiftData and I want to implement iCloud sync in it. Now, my data base doesnt have any optional attributes or relationships and CloudKit wants them to be optional.
So, rather than editing all code with unwrapping code for the optionals, how can I provide a bridge that does so in the last stage of actually saving to the store? Sort of, capture it in a proxy object before writing and after reading from the store.
Is there a neat way that can save a lot of debugging? I have code snippets from chat gpt and they are hard to debug. This is my first project in swiftUI.

I would like to have a SwiftData predicate that filters against an array of PersistentIdentifiers.
A trivial use case could filtering Posts by one or more Categories. This sounds like something that must be trivial to do.
When doing the following, however:

The code compiles, but produces the following runtime exception (XCode 26 beta, iOS 26 simulator):

I'm developing a SwiftUI app using SwiftData and encountering a persistent issue:
Error Message:
Thread 1: Fatal error: Duplicate keys of type 'Bland' were found in a Dictionary.
This usually means either that the type violates Hashable's requirements, or that members of such a dictionary were mutated after insertion.
Details:
Occurrence: The error always occurs on the first launch of the app after installation. Specifically, it happens approximately 1 minute after the app starts.
Inconsistent Behavior: Despite no changes to the code or server data, the error occurs inconsistently.
Data Fetching Process:
I fetch data for entities (Bland, CrossZansu, and Trade) from the server using the following process:

Hello,
I have 3 model versions and I'm trying to step through migration.
Version 2 makes significant changes to v1. As a result, I've renamed the entities in question by appending _v2 to their name, as the data isn't important to retain.
v3, remove's the appended version number from v2.
Setting the .xcdatamodeld to v3 and the migrations steps array as follows causes the app to error

An error occurred during persistent store migration. Cannot merge multiple root entity source tables into one destination entity root table.
I find this odd because if I run the migration independently across app launches, the migration appears to drop the no longer used tables in v2, then re-add them back in v3. So it seems to me that something is not finishing completely with the fully stepped through migration.
