Thanks for a very detailed response. The error message displayed in Finder is 'The operation cannot be completed because the item is in use.' I didn't find anything pertaining to this particular operation logged to the console. In the early stages of the project, before support for extended attributes was added in, I went with AppleDouble files. Thanks for pointing this out, I'll try skipping them altogether and rely on the use of extended attributes in stead.

Thanks. I did observe that behaviour with TextEdit.app. I also noted that in that case file data consistency was being guarded by advisory locking.
