I have just purchased Macbook Air with Catalina 10.15.7 and got the same issue when I was trying to install cocoapads based on the instruction at reactnative.dev/docs/environment-setup. The instruction says sudo gem install cocoapods Try "brew install cocoapods" instead and it will get cocoapods installed without this error. Hope this helps.
