I had this behavior in all macOS versions so far. This can be configured in the iterms settings. I do not recall the exact link - maybe this one https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/154292/iterm-going-one-word-backwards-and-forwards. I switched to hyper terminal. Much saner default there
