I succeeded using the following method.Go into developer in settings, then AirPods testing and if it shows your AirPods there remove then (swipe left), then factory reset the AirPods (as per apple instructions) then set them up, then back in the dev app tap ur AirPods and enable the beta updates, then normal plug in and leave near your device (mine was about 30 minutes).
