I'm stuck in the same boat. I don't think there is a workaround for content scripts.

This workaround does not work for content scripts as the relative URL is resolved relative to the website the script is running in.

But clearly I am able to reply and comment here so I'm not sure what is wrong with the other post. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
