I used this screen, Xcode -> Product -> Destination to see first of all that my device was not recognised and connected, so I was able to work on this by reconnecting and restarting my ipad a few times until my macbook Xcode finally recognised the ipad. After that the ipad asked questions about trusting this computer, had to restart ipad and reconnect the USB a couple of times - eventually through sheer persistence and reading all the threads in this post to encourage me that I was on the right track, eventually the ipad was visible and connected in developer mode. Took 20 minutes or so though, was not easy. Thanks for your help in this thread
