I would like to share the perspective of solo developers and small startup founders regarding the annual $99 Apple Developer Program fee.
Many independent developers do not build consumer apps for millions of users. In my case, I develop custom applications for one or two clients at a time. My business model is based on finding clients and delivering apps specifically for their organizations, not publishing apps for public downloads or generating revenue from App Store traffic.
The current Apple Developer Program includes many features such as App Analytics, download statistics, engagement reports, sales reports, testing tools, and other advanced services. These features may be very useful for companies targeting large audiences, but many small developers simply do not need them.
For developers like me, the primary requirement is only to publish and maintain client applications on the App Store. We do not need advanced analytics, marketing insights, download tracking, or other enterprise-level features.
I believe Apple should consider introducing a lower-cost plan for:
Solo developers Independent consultants Freelancers Bootstrapped startups Developers serving a small number of clients
Such a plan could provide basic App Store publishing capabilities without the additional analytics and business features, making it more affordable for independent developers.
The current $99 annual fee may be reasonable for businesses with a large user base, but for developers serving only a few clients, it can be a significant expense.
I would be interested to hear whether other independent developers feel the same way.
Thanks.
