Safari Should Allow Background WebRTC for Real-Time Audio Apps
WebRTC and Web Audio are essential for modern web applications, powering everything from real-time voice communication to accessibility tools. However, in iOS Safari, these technologies are suspended as soon as the screen locks or Safari goes into the background. This makes web-based calling, live audio spaces, broadcast sessions and assistive applications unreliable for iOS users. Why This Matters: It’s impractical and inefficient. Asking users to keep their screen on to continue a WebRTC call wastes more battery, as the display is one of the most power-intensive components of a device. Allowing WebRTC audio to run in the background would be more battery-efficient than forcing the screen to stay lit for extended periods. Competing platforms allow WebRTC to run in the background. Safari’s restriction puts web-based applications at a disadvantage compared to native apps. Many industries depend on persistent WebRTC audio, including telehealth, live broadcasting, and accessibility tools. This restriction forces developers to build native iOS apps instead of using the open web, limiting web innovation and increasing development costs. Proposed Solution: Apple could implement an explicit user permission for background WebRTC, similar to how background audio playback is already handled for media apps. This would balance user security with the need for uninterrupted real-time communication—without forcing users to keep their screens on unnecessarily. I would love to hear if anyone has found workarounds or if Apple has commented on potential improvements in future iOS versions.

Custom WkWebsiteDatastore
Hey team, I've integrated custom WkWebsiteDatastore to manage profiling for different sessions. upon testing the WkWebsiteDataStore as its mentioned to be persistent But The storage can be accessed via identifier, But the session data in storage is absent, such as cookies caches all are cleared when app is relaunched is it the default behavior to be expected or there is some property missing causing the session data to be removed from storage.

Unwarranted Autofill prompt for non authenticator grid boxes
On Mac, If the user registers the Password and the Software Authenticator app for a website like PayPal then uses the Safari browser to login the Apple system is creating confusion. The system prompts to use the authenticator autofill for any grid like SMS OTP or even for the Email OTP. That creates confusion for the user as the SMS OTPs or other OTPs cannot be validated by auto filling the Authenticator TOTP. That fails the validation resulting in bad user experience. The system should not prompt the Autofill from the Authenticator app unless the grid box shown on the page was for the Authenticator app.

Safari Takes 30 Seconds to Load mTLS-Enabled Sites Unless in Private Browsing
I’m experiencing an issue where Safari takes approximately 30 seconds to load web pages on mTLS-enabled sites. However, when I enable Private Browsing mode, the problem disappears. This suggests that the issue is not related to the network environment. To provide more context, I’ve attached a Wireshark packet capture for reference. From the logs, it seems that the TLS handshake process encounters delays, but I cannot identify the exact cause. Has anyone encountered a similar issue or can provide insights into what might be causing this behavior? Any troubleshooting suggestions or fixes would be greatly appreciated. OS: iPadOS 18.2.1 Thank you! Wireshark packet capture

Safari Does Not Include topOrigin in WebAuthn clientDataJSON Despite crossOrigin: true
Hello, I’m working on a cross-origin WebAuthn implementation where a parent page embeds an iframe from a different origin to perform authentication. According to the WebAuthn Level 3 spec (Section 7.1.1), when crossOrigin is true, the clientDataJSON may include topOrigin—but Safari does not seem to populate this field. Observed Behavior: Chrome/Firefox: Include topOrigin in clientDataJSON when crossOrigin: true. Safari (macOS/iOS): Omits topOrigin even though crossOrigin is correctly set to true. Example clientDataJSON from Safari: { "type": "webauthn.get", "challenge": "...", "origin": "https://iframe-origin.example.com", "crossOrigin": true // Missing `topOrigin` (expected: parent origin) } Questions: Is this an intentional omission in Safari for privacy/security reasons? Are there specific requirements (e.g., HTTP headers, permissions policies) needed for Safari to expose topOrigin? Is there a known workaround to reliably obtain the top-level origin in cross-origin WebAuthn flows? System Info: Version 18.4 (20621.1.15.11.10) OS: Sequoia Version 18.4 (20621.1.15.11.10) Reproduction Steps: Parent page (https://parent.example.com) embeds an iframe (https://webauthn-rp.example.com). The iframe calls navigator.credentials.get() with a WebAuthn challenge. Safari returns clientDataJSON with crossOrigin: true but no topOrigin. Code Snippet (iframe): const credential = await navigator.credentials.get({ publicKey: { challenge: new Uint8Array(/* ... */), rpId: 'webauthn-rp.example.com', allowCredentials: [], hints: [], userVerification: "preferred", } }); console.log(JSON.parse(atob(credential.response.clientDataJSON))); Has anyone encountered this? Any insights would be greatly appreciated!

Security - How to secure communication between app and safari extension
Hello. We are adding a Safari extension to our app and we have some questions about communication between the app and its extension. We have added the nativeMessaging permission to the extension so that it can communicate with the app and communication between both are doing very well. Our question is about the security of communications between the two. How can we be sure the native app communicates well with the correct extension? Can the Safari extension communicate with another native app or can the native app receive messages from another extension?

Safari Extension: Cookie Header Missing in Background Fetch from Non-Default User Profile (Works in Default Profile)
When our Safari Web Extension makes a api request from its background script (registered via "scripts" in manifest.json, e.g., "background": { "scripts": ["js/background.bundle.js"] }) to our authenticated API endpoint (https://api-domain/user), the Cookie header is not included in the request. This occurs only when the extension is running within a non-default Safari User Profile. This causes our API to treat the user as unauthenticated. The exact same extension code, manifest, and API call work correctly (Cookie header is present and user is authenticated) when the extension is running in the Default Safari User Profile.

The top of the body pages on my website is cut off on ios
Hello, When I view my website (lasaluade) on iphone or ipad the top of my page bodies are cut off (3-4 first lines). However, on PC, Mac or Android everything is OK (see screenshots). For the record, I built this site with Wordpress and Divi Builder, and I've the same result on Safari and Chrome. Not being a developer, I don't know where to look (I just think it's iOS-related). Have you already had this problem? Do you have any ideas? Thanks for your help!

HELP!Apple Pay Web application cannot pay due to the bottom rotation issue
I built a web application using the Apple Pay on the Web Interactive Demo with the Payment Request API, but encountered a few issues: The initiated web Apple Pay interface shows a spinning circle at the bottom and cannot proceed with payment(Bottom display:正在处理). What could be causing this? How to set up sandbox testing for payments? How to asynchronously and synchronously retrieve payment results (backend code to fetch payment results)? The demo only shows frontend code using await response.complete("success"); for retrieving payment results my demo URL: https://shop.wowseer.com/rsolomakhin/pr/applepay/

Notification sound (Web or PWA)
Good morning fellow developers, For a while i am struggeling with providing sound to my users on IOS (Safari on Mac is no problem and every other device is not a problem) (we have an existing phone system and made a chat as well), the case is very simple: the notification sound is only for users who are logged in and online for chat. i have tried multiple things: Audio play with javascript (start with mute, play when user clicks a button so the sound is familiar, play when user clicks a button and directly pause it and continue when needed) PWA: the dashboard has been made available as pwa and notifications using google firebase. The popup does show for notifcations to be allowed (and receiving the notifications does work on any other device) But any IOS device cannot register. The information i find is that notifications were supported with 16.4 or higher but also have been deprecated around IOS 17, auto play is not allowed. We have an app in development for our product as well were we will have a notification which will handle this, but that is not the solution we can use now. Long story, short question: is it still somehow possible to push a notification to the user when using the PWA or play a sound in the browser (based on an ajax function). The app/website wont be in the background, so it will always be on the screen. Languages we use: html/javascript (mostly vanilla)/php

Smart Banner for Testflight App
Hi, I am wondering if anyone has experience with Smart Banners for an application not released on the app store, but still in TestFlight, specifically an AppClip. I am working on an exisiting project where a Smart Clip is used with a smart banner on the website for core functionality. Previously, even in test environment (app is in test flight and not app store) the smart banner would correctly show on the website and allow testers to launch the app clip experience, however this no longer seems to work. Its noted the test environment was last tested and deployed 2 years ago, and was working correctly, and there have been no changes to the website (the meta tag and .aasa file are all setup correctly). The only recent change was upgrading the app to support the latest iOS version, however beyond that no functionality in the app has changed. Apple developer support hasn't been very helpful, and reviewed our account and stated "everything appears to be running as expected on our end" Has something changed in Safari in that it no longer accepts test flight app smart banners, and if it doesn't, does anyone have any other suggestions? Cheers

Throttling on navigator.geolocation.getCurrentPosition on Safari
I'm using navigator.geolocation.getCurrentPosition to retrieve the users coordinates in a PWA built with Nextjs. getCurrentPosition is called by clicking on a button. If getCurrentPosition is called afterwards, the cached value is returned. On Safari, If I refresh the page, or logout, login and call getCurrentPosition again, the getCurrentPosition error callback is called with an error code 2 - POSITION_UNAVAILABLE. After around five minutes, getCurrentPosition can be called again. Is there some kind of throttling restriction on Safari navigator.geolocation.getCurrentPosition?

(iOS 26 / WebKit): Fixed-position header misaligned after keyboard interaction and interactive swipe-back in WKWebView
Steps to Reproduce 1. Create a native UIViewController with a WKWebView, loading test-1.html (contains position:fixed header that displays correctly). 2. Push another UIViewController also with a WKWebView, this time loading test-2.html. 3. In test-2.html, tap into the to summon the on-screen keyboard. 4. Without calling blur(), perform an interactive swipe-back gesture to go back to the first view controller. 5. Observe that the fixed header in test-1.html is now offset downward by approximately the height of the keyboard and does not return to its original position. demo-link : https://bugs.webkit.org/attachment.cgi?id=476324

Do page img-src CSPs apply to Safari WebExtension content scripts injected HTML img tag?
I am currently developing a Chrome, Firefox and Safari web extension, and I am facing a CSP issue on the content script on Safari. The extension I develop has a content script that injects an img tag in the DOM of web pages the user is visiting. That img tag fetches its content at a specific URL. On Chrome and on Firefox, the img tag content fetches the content at the URL with no issue on every web pages, including those that set the CSP header img-src. On Safari, I'm getting the following error on web sites that set the img-src CSP header: Refused to load https://axxlfrmnpq.cloudimg.io/www.macifavantages.fr/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Garmin-logo.png?func=bound&w=225&h=113 because it does not appear in the img-src directive of the Content Security Policy. Here is the actual CSP img-src header content of the web page where, on Safari, the injected img tag does not load the content at https://axxlfrmnpq.cloudimg.io/www.macifavantages.fr/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Garmin-logo.png?func=bound&w=225&h=113: Content-Security-Policy: img-src https://secure.adnxs.com https://www.facebook.com https://.garmin.cn 'self' data: .garmin.com .trustarc.com .truste.com https://static.garmincdn.com https://www.google.com https://www.google.co.uk https://prefmgr-cookie.truste-svc.net https://res.cloudinary.com https://res.garmin.com https://.criteo.com https://.doubleclick.net https://www.googleadservices.com https://px.adentifi.com https://rtb.adentifi.com https://.teads.tv https://www.googletagmanager.com https://bat.bing.com https://.yahoo.com https://sync.outbrain.com https://*.google-analytics.com https://stats.g.doubleclick.net https://static.hotjar.com https://script.hotjar.com .akamaihd.net https://.tealiumiq.com https://deploytealium.com https://pixel.mediaiqdigital.com; My question is, is the page CSP blocking the img tag injected in the web page by the extension's content script? If so, is this behavior documented somewhere, or is it a Safari bug? I saw there is a similar post on the forum, but I couldn't find if the issue is a bug or if it's the expected behavior on Safari: https://developer.apple.com/forums/thread/651542?login=true. Thank you very much for your help.

Notify web extension native process of user default changes
My Mac app and its Safari web extension share an app group, and I want to notify the web extension native process when the app makes a change to the app group NSUserDefaults, but I can't find a good way to do this. According to the documentation, "You can use key-value observing to register observers for specific keys of interest in order to be notified of all updates, regardless of whether changes are made within or outside the current process." In my testing, however, this doesn't work in the web extension process. I'm using NSUserDefaults addObserver forKeyPath, but observeValueForKeyPath never gets called. I've also tried NSDistributedNotificationCenter, but the web extension process doesn't receive the notifications sent by the main app. Are either of these supposed to work? If not, are there any alternatives?

PointerEvents on Safari on iPad with Apple Pencil Pro
Hi, I would like to share a finding and ask for a solution, if possible. This may be a potential bug with PointerMoveEvent on Safari on an iPad with Pencil Pro. I tested onPointerMove and onTouchMove in a <canvas> element in a React web app for freehand drawing using Mouse on a PC. Finger touch on iPad Apple pencil pro on iPad Finger touch on iPhone I was able to draw smooth curves in all cases except when using onPointerMove with Apple pencil pro on iPad. The curve drawn in this case looked like it was created using several straight-line segments. It seems like the sampling rate for PointerMoveEvent is lower than that of TouchMoveEvent on Safari I am not sure how to solve this problem or if it is an issue with Safari's interpretation of PointerEvents. Any input is greatly appreciated. Edit: It seems like https://developer.apple.com/forums/thread/689375 is related.

Videos keep refetched with loop
Hello there, For a video like this <video src="blob:safari-web-extension://***" autoplay="" loop="" style="position: absolute; top: 0px; left: 0px; width: 100%; height: 100%; object-fit: cover; z-index: -1;"></video>, no matter if its local or remote, blob or mp4 files, is constantly being reloaded (refetched? revalidated?) if the loop tag is added. I can confirm there is actual constant traffic from the server based on my server logs. I am running iOS/macOS 26.
