Questions about RoomPlan, Room API, USDZ/STEP comparison, and extended spatial scanning
Dear Apple Developer Team, I would like to ask a few questions related to RoomPlan, Room API, USDZ export, and possible future spatial scanning workflows: Can the RoomPlan or Room API load an existing USDZ room model and compare it in real time with a new live scan of the same space? Is Apple considering extending RoomPlan beyond indoor rooms, for example to scan outdoor areas, house exteriors, terrain, and simple building volumes with rough dimensions? Also in indoor to scan slopes with angle room for rooms in roof floor? Will RoomPlan support multi-floor continuous scanning, custom object detection elements, and reliable export of the scanned result to USDZ for further CAD/BIM workflows? Is it possible to create a real-time comparator between a reference object in USDZ or STEP format and a physical object being scanned live, so that deviations in geometry or dimensions can be detected during scanning? Xcode fails to compile Blender-exported USDZ in .rkassets with misleading "permission" error — Xcode 26.3
The error: When building a RealityKitContent package that contains a USDZ file exported from Blender, Xcode throws the following error: error: [xrsimulator] Exception thrown during compile: Cannot get rkassets content for path .../RealityKitContent.rkassets because 'The file "RealityKitContent.rkassets" couldn't be opened because you don't have permission to view it.' error: Tool exited with code 1 The error message mentions "permission" — but permissions are not the issue. This appears to be a misleading error from realitytool masking a USD validation failure. What I've ruled out File permissions — all files are -rw-r--r--, user has Read & Write on the folder Extended attributes / quarantine flag — other files with the same @ flag work fine Corrupted archive — unzip -t confirms the USDZ is valid (board.usdc + textures) Stale build cache — deleted DerivedData and com.apple.DeveloperTools cache, no change Key observations The same file builds successfully on my colleague's machine running identical Xcode 26.3 - MacOS 26.3 Other USDZ files in the same .rkassets bundle (downloaded from Sketchfab, or created in Reality Composer Pro) compile without any issue. Only USDZ files exported directly from Blender are affected. When the file is placed in Bundle.main and loaded via Entity(named:in:.main), it works perfectly — no errors Reality Converter flags the file with two errors: UsdGeomPointInstancers not allowed, and root layer must be .usdc with no external dependencies The confusing part: the same file compiles fine on an identical Xcode 26.3 setup and importing method. This suggests either a machine-specific difference in Xcode's validation behavior, or a cached .reality bundle on my colleague's machine that isn't being recompiled. Current workaround: Loading from Bundle.main instead of the RealityKitContent package bypasses realitytool entirely and works, but loses Reality Composer Pro integration: if let entity = try? await Entity(named: "test", in: Bundle.main)

Multiple-frames BlendShape (failed) Animation in Reality Composer Pro
Goal: To render in an apple vision pro app, the solid-mechanics 3D simulation results coming form an FEA code. Starting point: I have surface vtks with deformations on each node. Each time step has a a mesh with the nodal coordinates. This is straighforward translatable to a usd MeshSequence. Unfortunately, the results cannot be simplified to a scaling o linear transformation as you would do with other game-oriented animations. Tools: Right now, I am using Xcode and reality composer pro (RCP) to build the scenes. Technical limitations: I am aware that RCP can do animations with BlendMesh and skeletons and that MeshSequence is not a problem. Progress: Coverting to the sequence of vtk meshes to a usd MeshSequence is straighforward. This animates correctly in Preview and Blender (see screenshot). I managed to convert from MeshSequence to multiple keys and BlendMesh. This also animates correctly in Blender and preview. Unfortunately, the BlendMesh of multiple blended meshes shows a zero animation time in RCP (see screenshot below) Also, see below usda file scheme for the animation. Of course I am not showing full vectors such as faceVertexCounts, faceVertexIndex, normals. Question: what is the right set up to create a BlendMesh animation that RCP will correctly import and animate, form a set of Meshes or multiple key shapes? How to play blend shape animations or morph animations exported from blender in Vision Pro apps using Reality Kit
So I am exporting a .usdc file from blender that already has some morph animations. The animations play well in blender but when I export I cannot seem to play them in RealityKit or RCP. Entity.availableAnimations is an empty array. Not of the child objects in the entity hierarchy has an animation library component with it. Maybe I am exporting it wrong but I tried multiple combinations but doesn't seem to work. Here are my export settings in blender The original file I purchased is an FBX file that has the animation but when I try to directly get it in RealityConverter it doesn't seem to play animations.

Converting a Stop Motion Animation to usdz
Hello everyone, I've been trying for a few weeks now to convert a sequential series of meshes into a stop-motion animation in USDZ format. In Unreal Engine, I’ve already figured out how to transform the sequential series of individual meshes into a smooth animation using the node system and arrays. Unfortunately, the node system cannot be exported as a usdz animation logic in either Unreal or Blender. Because of this, I have tried several other methods to incorporate the animation logic. Here’s what I’ve tried so far: I attempted to create the animation in Blender with Render-/Viewports and mapping it to keyframes. However, in my experience, Viewports are not supported in the conversion. I tried aligning the vertices of individual objects and merging the frames using the Shrinkwrap modifier in Blender, then setting up a morph animation with keyframes. However, because the individual meshes are too different, this results in artifacts, and manually editing each mesh is too difficult for me to handle. I placed all individual meshes at the same position and animated them sequentially by scaling them from 0 to 100 in keyframes (Frame 1 is visible for 10 frames, then scales down at frame 11, while Frame 2 becomes visible at frame 11, and so on). I also adjusted the keyframes so that the scaling happens in a "constant" manner rather than the default Bezier or linear interpolation. I then converted this animation to .abc, and the result initially looked good. However, some information is lost when converting it with OpenUSD. The animation does not maintain its intended jump-like behavior in USDZ format, and instead, the scaling of individual files is visible in the animation. I tried using a Blender add-on (StepMotion), which allows the animation to be exported as .abc, but it can only be read in Blender or Unreal. Even in the preview, the animation is not displayed correctly, so converting the animation logic does not work either. 
Unfortunately, I have no alternative way to create the animation, as the individual frames have been provided to me as meshes. So far, I haven’t found a way to implement this successfully. I would be very grateful for any tips or ideas, as I am running out of options on how to make this work. Thanks in advance!

Issue with FBX import -- models are ultra small
When importing FBX animations (generated by Cinema 4d or Blender) the models come in very far way and cannot resize or zoomed in. I have tried every setting from both programs to no avail. Is there a secret to providing the right export options? When importing without animations/and rigging the model imports fine and correct size. But once motion is included, something is awry. I also tried changing base units in Converter, but did not work. I have attache my model heirarchy in C4D as well as the imported result. It appears the animation is imported, as I can see it move, but can barely see it :)

USDZ File Crashes in QuickLook on iPad 9th Gen (iPadOS 18.3) – Urgent Help Needed
Hi everyone, I’m experiencing a critical issue with USDZ files created in Reality Composer on an iPad 9th Generation (iPadOS 18.3). The files work perfectly on iPads from the 10th Generation onwards and on iPad Pros. However, on older devices like the iPad 9th Generation and older iPhones, QuickLook (file preview) crashes when opening them. This is a major issue because these USDZ files are part of an exhibition where artworks are extended with AR elements via a web page. If some visitors cannot view the 3D content, it significantly impacts the experience. What’s puzzling is that two years ago, we exported USDZ files from Reality Composer, made them available via a website, and they worked flawlessly on all devices, including older iPads and iPhones. Now, with the latest iPadOS, they consistently crash on older devices. Has anyone encountered a similar issue? Are there known limitations with QuickLook on older devices, or is there a way to optimize the USDZ files to prevent crashes? Could this be related to changes in iPadOS or RealityKit? Any advice or workaround would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

RealityComposer text items (arkit/ios18) not displaying
I have created a simple scene in reality composer (composer not composer pro). It contains just a cube and text item. I convert this to usdz file and load it into a Arkit swift app. Since ios 18/xcode 16 - the "text" element is not displayed at all. The cube is displayed, anchors correctly and can be moved etc.... Apple's Choice: USDZ over Other 3D File Formats like GLTF
Hello Dev Community, I've been thinking over Apple's preference for USDZ for AR and 3D content, especially when there's the widely used GLTF. I'm keen to discuss and hear your insights on this choice. USDZ, backed by Apple, has seen a surge in the AR community. It boasts advantages like compactness, animation support, and ARKit compatibility. In contrast, GLTF too is a popular format with its own merits, like being an open standard and offering flexibility. Here are some of my questions toward the use of USDZ: Why did Apple choose USDZ over other 3D file formats like GLTF? What benefits does USDZ bring to Apple's AR and 3D content ecosystem? USDZ in Keynote
Apple's own USDZ files from their website does not display properly both in OPReview and in Keynote when imported. It displays properly, however, in Reality Converter bit with this error: "Invalid USD shader node in USD file Shader nodes must have “id” as the implementationSource, with id values that begin with “Usd”. Also, shader inputs with connections must each have a single, valid connection source." I tried importing other models from external sources and they work without any issue at all. Is there any potential fix or workaround this? Thanks in advance.

Is there a way to make an .objcap file from a .USDZ file
I have design a 3D object and exported it as a USDZ. I also 3D printed said object. I want to use the object as a 3D trigger for an AR experience I am building. My question is: is there a process that would let me take the 3D .usdz file and convert it to a .arobject or a .objcap medium/low density point cloud to use as an AR trigger. Because I do have the 3D print of the object I did use the "scan" option when setting up my scene but the "resolution"/fidelity seems really low, and the results I get are just mediocre. I would love to take my 3D USDZ that I already have and use it to generate a file that can be used as a 3D trigger. is this possible, or is there a process to do this. I am able to take the 3D that I scan in Reality Composer (which is exported as a .objcap file), send it to reality converter on my Mac and make a USDZ from it. I am looking for a way to go the other way .USDZ > .objcap or .arobject. I am trying to make a experience that mimic projection mapping but in AR. I have a 3D object I built and textured in substance painter. I also printed this object in a base gray color. I want to use the 3D print of the object as an AR trigger that would start a scene placing/overlaying/projection mapping the textured 3D model over the gray 3D printed model. Ideally the mapped 3D model would be spatial attached to the 3D print and move with it when the object is handled.

Convert .reality into USDZ
Hey Everyone, this is like my first post here in the apple forum. I need your help to understand better Reality Kit and file exports, but let me explain. I'm trying to create a little 3D Object editor, and it looks like to work pretty well using RealityViews and managing materials on the Entity. I'm currently working with all the Beta Apis and I would like to export my entity into an .usdz or a .obj file. I've found a method that allows me to create a .Reality File let path = FileManager.default.urls(for: .documentDirectory, in: .userDomainMask)[0].appendingPathComponent("model.reality") try await self.appState.parentEntity.write(to: path) but I now I don't know how to convert it into a .usdz or a .obj file, or otherwise any standard 3d format. Do you have any idea on how could I do? Thankyou so much! Have a nice day ^^

Adding 2D PNG to Reality Composer Pro
I've got a couple 2D PNG assets that I want to add to a scene made of a couple other udsz files in RCP (picture adding a couple 2D videogame characters to a simple 3D diorama). When I try to drag the PNGs to the workspace or the file tree…nothing happens. I found a walkthrough on Medium (called "Importing and Exporting Personalized Objects for Augmented Reality: Reality Composer and SwiftUI" for those curious as I can't link to Medium posts here) that makes it look like users could do this with simple drag-and-drop. The Medium post is from June 2023, and in the screenshots RCP visually looks a lot more like Reality Composer on iPad, so I'm assuming it's changed a lot since then? Is there still a way to do this? I've tried adding the 2D elements to a scene with Blenders "import images as planes," but I'm getting weird halos around them and was hoping RCP could make the process a bit easier/cleaner.

USDZ + ShaderGraphMaterial not working?
I'm trying to make a simple demo of using ShaderGraphMaterial in a USDZ file that I can preview on Mac and VisionOS but I'm having trouble. In Reality Composer, I make a sphere, then assign a ShaderGraphMaterial to the material, with a simple diffuse color (green) input. When I save the file as .usda, it displays as a gray sphere on mac rather than the green sphere shown in reality composer. If I then convert to usdz using Reality Converter, I get a warning on import: "Shader nodes must have “id” as the implementationSource, with id values that begin with “Usd”. Also, shader inputs with connections must each have a single, valid connection source." And the exported .usdz also shows as a gray sphere. Is there a simple demo of a .usda file using ShaderGraphMaterial that displays on Mac, iOS, and VisionOS that I can look at to see how it looks internally? My actual problem is creating usdz / usda files on visionOS for viewing on iOS / Mac / VisionOS.. but the first step is showing it's possible to even use ShaderGraphMaterial across all platforms. Goal: To render in an apple vision pro app, the solid-mechanics 3D simulation results coming form an FEA code. Starting point: I have surface vtks with deformations on each node. Each time step has a a mesh with the nodal coordinates. This is straighforward translatable to a usd MeshSequence. Unfortunately, the results cannot be simplified to a scaling o linear transformation as you would do with other game-oriented animations. Tools: Right now, I am using Xcode and reality composer pro (RCP) to build the scenes. Technical limitations: I am aware that RCP can do animations with BlendMesh and skeletons and that MeshSequence is not a problem. Progress: Coverting to the sequence of vtk meshes to a usd MeshSequence is straighforward. This animates correctly in Preview and Blender (see screenshot). I managed to convert from MeshSequence to multiple keys and BlendMesh. This also animates correctly in Blender and preview. Unfortunately, the BlendMesh of multiple blended meshes shows a zero animation time in RCP (see screenshot below) Also, see below usda file scheme for the animation. Of course I am not showing full vectors such as faceVertexCounts, faceVertexIndex, normals. Question: what is the right set up to create a BlendMesh animation that RCP will correctly import and animate, form a set of Meshes or multiple key shapes? How to play blend shape animations or morph animations exported from blender in Vision Pro apps using Reality Kit
So I am exporting a .usdc file from blender that already has some morph animations. The animations play well in blender but when I export I cannot seem to play them in RealityKit or RCP. Entity.availableAnimations is an empty array. Not of the child objects in the entity hierarchy has an animation library component with it. Maybe I am exporting it wrong but I tried multiple combinations but doesn't seem to work. Here are my export settings in blender The original file I purchased is an FBX file that has the animation but when I try to directly get it in RealityConverter it doesn't seem to play animations.

Converting a Stop Motion Animation to usdz
Hello everyone, I've been trying for a few weeks now to convert a sequential series of meshes into a stop-motion animation in USDZ format. In Unreal Engine, I’ve already figured out how to transform the sequential series of individual meshes into a smooth animation using the node system and arrays. Unfortunately, the node system cannot be exported as a usdz animation logic in either Unreal or Blender. Because of this, I have tried several other methods to incorporate the animation logic. Here’s what I’ve tried so far: I attempted to create the animation in Blender with Render-/Viewports and mapping it to keyframes. However, in my experience, Viewports are not supported in the conversion. I tried aligning the vertices of individual objects and merging the frames using the Shrinkwrap modifier in Blender, then setting up a morph animation with keyframes. However, because the individual meshes are too different, this results in artifacts, and manually editing each mesh is too difficult for me to handle. I placed all individual meshes at the same position and animated them sequentially by scaling them from 0 to 100 in keyframes (Frame 1 is visible for 10 frames, then scales down at frame 11, while Frame 2 becomes visible at frame 11, and so on). I also adjusted the keyframes so that the scaling happens in a "constant" manner rather than the default Bezier or linear interpolation. I then converted this animation to .abc, and the result initially looked good. However, some information is lost when converting it with OpenUSD. The animation does not maintain its intended jump-like behavior in USDZ format, and instead, the scaling of individual files is visible in the animation. I tried using a Blender add-on (StepMotion), which allows the animation to be exported as .abc, but it can only be read in Blender or Unreal. Even in the preview, the animation is not displayed correctly, so converting the animation logic does not work either. 
Unfortunately, I have no alternative way to create the animation, as the individual frames have been provided to me as meshes. So far, I haven’t found a way to implement this successfully. I would be very grateful for any tips or ideas, as I am running out of options on how to make this work. Thanks in advance!

Issue with FBX import -- models are ultra small
When importing FBX animations (generated by Cinema 4d or Blender) the models come in very far way and cannot resize or zoomed in. I have tried every setting from both programs to no avail. Is there a secret to providing the right export options? When importing without animations/and rigging the model imports fine and correct size. But once motion is included, something is awry. I also tried changing base units in Converter, but did not work. I have attache my model heirarchy in C4D as well as the imported result. It appears the animation is imported, as I can see it move, but can barely see it :)

USDZ File Crashes in QuickLook on iPad 9th Gen (iPadOS 18.3) – Urgent Help Needed
Hi everyone, I’m experiencing a critical issue with USDZ files created in Reality Composer on an iPad 9th Generation (iPadOS 18.3). The files work perfectly on iPads from the 10th Generation onwards and on iPad Pros. However, on older devices like the iPad 9th Generation and older iPhones, QuickLook (file preview) crashes when opening them. This is a major issue because these USDZ files are part of an exhibition where artworks are extended with AR elements via a web page. If some visitors cannot view the 3D content, it significantly impacts the experience. What’s puzzling is that two years ago, we exported USDZ files from Reality Composer, made them available via a website, and they worked flawlessly on all devices, including older iPads and iPhones. Now, with the latest iPadOS, they consistently crash on older devices. Has anyone encountered a similar issue? Are there known limitations with QuickLook on older devices, or is there a way to optimize the USDZ files to prevent crashes? Could this be related to changes in iPadOS or RealityKit? Any advice or workaround would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

RealityComposer text items (arkit/ios18) not displaying
I have created a simple scene in reality composer (composer not composer pro). It contains just a cube and text item. I convert this to usdz file and load it into a Arkit swift app. Since ios 18/xcode 16 - the "text" element is not displayed at all. The cube is displayed, anchors correctly and can be moved etc.... Apple's Choice: USDZ over Other 3D File Formats like GLTF

USDZ in Keynote
Apple's own USDZ files from their website does not display properly both in OPReview and in Keynote when imported. It displays properly, however, in Reality Converter bit with this error: "Invalid USD shader node in USD file Shader nodes must have “id” as the implementationSource, with id values that begin with “Usd”. Also, shader inputs with connections must each have a single, valid connection source." I tried importing other models from external sources and they work without any issue at all. Is there any potential fix or workaround this? Thanks in advance.

Is there a way to make an .objcap file from a .USDZ file
I have design a 3D object and exported it as a USDZ. I also 3D printed said object. I want to use the object as a 3D trigger for an AR experience I am building. My question is: is there a process that would let me take the 3D .usdz file and convert it to a .arobject or a .objcap medium/low density point cloud to use as an AR trigger. Because I do have the 3D print of the object I did use the "scan" option when setting up my scene but the "resolution"/fidelity seems really low, and the results I get are just mediocre. I would love to take my 3D USDZ that I already have and use it to generate a file that can be used as a 3D trigger. is this possible, or is there a process to do this. I am able to take the 3D that I scan in Reality Composer (which is exported as a .objcap file), send it to reality converter on my Mac and make a USDZ from it. I am looking for a way to go the other way .USDZ > .objcap or .arobject. I am trying to make a experience that mimic projection mapping but in AR. I have a 3D object I built and textured in substance painter. I also printed this object in a base gray color. I want to use the 3D print of the object as an AR trigger that would start a scene placing/overlaying/projection mapping the textured 3D model over the gray 3D printed model. Ideally the mapped 3D model would be spatial attached to the 3D print and move with it when the object is handled.

Convert .reality into USDZ
Hey Everyone, this is like my first post here in the apple forum. I need your help to understand better Reality Kit and file exports, but let me explain. I'm trying to create a little 3D Object editor, and it looks like to work pretty well using RealityViews and managing materials on the Entity. I'm currently working with all the Beta Apis and I would like to export my entity into an .usdz or a .obj file. I've found a method that allows me to create a .Reality File let path = FileManager.default.urls(for: .documentDirectory, in: .userDomainMask)[0].appendingPathComponent("model.reality") try await self.appState.parentEntity.write(to: path) but I now I don't know how to convert it into a .usdz or a .obj file, or otherwise any standard 3d format. Do you have any idea on how could I do? Thankyou so much! Have a nice day ^^

Adding 2D PNG to Reality Composer Pro
I've got a couple 2D PNG assets that I want to add to a scene made of a couple other udsz files in RCP (picture adding a couple 2D videogame characters to a simple 3D diorama). When I try to drag the PNGs to the workspace or the file tree…nothing happens. I found a walkthrough on Medium (called "Importing and Exporting Personalized Objects for Augmented Reality: Reality Composer and SwiftUI" for those curious as I can't link to Medium posts here) that makes it look like users could do this with simple drag-and-drop. The Medium post is from June 2023, and in the screenshots RCP visually looks a lot more like Reality Composer on iPad, so I'm assuming it's changed a lot since then? Is there still a way to do this? I've tried adding the 2D elements to a scene with Blenders "import images as planes," but I'm getting weird halos around them and was hoping RCP could make the process a bit easier/cleaner.

USDZ + ShaderGraphMaterial not working?
I'm trying to make a simple demo of using ShaderGraphMaterial in a USDZ file that I can preview on Mac and VisionOS but I'm having trouble. In Reality Composer, I make a sphere, then assign a ShaderGraphMaterial to the material, with a simple diffuse color (green) input. When I save the file as .usda, it displays as a gray sphere on mac rather than the green sphere shown in reality composer. If I then convert to usdz using Reality Converter, I get a warning on import: "Shader nodes must have “id” as the implementationSource, with id values that begin with “Usd”. Also, shader inputs with connections must each have a single, valid connection source." And the exported .usdz also shows as a gray sphere. Is there a simple demo of a .usda file using ShaderGraphMaterial that displays on Mac, iOS, and VisionOS that I can look at to see how it looks internally? My actual problem is creating usdz / usda files on visionOS for viewing on iOS / Mac / VisionOS.. but the first step is showing it's possible to even use ShaderGraphMaterial across all platforms.
