Unfortunately it’s still a problem on the public release version of 18.4. Looks like switching to BGTaskScheduler.register is the only way to get around this.

The confusing thing is on the HIG it mentions this: Consider offering an alternate app icon. In iOS, iPadOS, tvOS, and visionOS, people can choose an alternate version of an icon, which can strengthen their connection with the app or game and enhance their experience.
