How do deal with NavigationSplitView not saving selection on iPhone
I have a detail view that has a @Binding var Thing, which is passed to it from the parent. It has TextFields that need to use that bound object's fields. // Using this to pass the selection around @Observable class AppSelection { var selectedThings:Set<Thing> = Set(); } struct ContentView: View { @State private var selectionStore = AppSelection(); var body: some View { NavigationSplitView { ... } content: { ...list that sets the selectionStore.selectedThings... } detail: { if !selectionStore.selectedThings.isEmpty { DetailView(thing:Binding( get: { selectionStore.selectedThings.first! }, // Crashes here set: { selectionStore.selectedThings = [$0] } )) .frame(maxHeight:.infinity, alignment:.top) } else { Text("Select a thing."); } } } } struct DetailView:View { @Binding var thing:Thing; var body:some View { TextField("Blah", $thing.name); TextField("Blerg", $thing.stuff); } }A crash happens when I navigate back from the DetailView in the line commented as such. I assume the NavigationSplitView is resetting the selection back to an empty state. Why the Binding given to the DetailView is even trying to get its value at that point is beyond me (so much weirdness in SwiftUI). I've taken so many different stabs at trying to make things work differently, but I just don't understand enough about SwiftUI. Like can I make the DetailView take an optional binding? If the Thing is nil, then all the TextFields complain that they require a non-optional binding. I don't even want to show the Detail view if nothing is selected (hence the "Select a thing.").

SwiftData Model object added to multiple parent objects moves ownership to only last parent
I thought an object could be added to as many other parents as I wanted, but now it's not behaving. @Model final class Genre { var name:String; init(name:String) { self.name = name; } } @Model final class Disc { var genre:Array<Genre> = []; }Then elsewhere I made sure the user is not creating a duplicate Genre before adding either the existing one or a new one: struct BlahView: View { @Query var allGenres:[Genre]; var theseGenres; // Pretend this is actually assigned. var body: some View { if let idx = allGenres.firstIndex(where: { genr in genr.name == editStr; }) { theseGenres.append(allGenres[idx]); } else { theseGenres.append(Genre(name:editStr)); } } }When the genre gets added to the 2nd parent, it goes away in the 1st parent it was added to. I initially used the #Unique<Genre>([\.name]) thingy in Genre, but then read that it does not work when the data is stored in CloudKit, which I'm doing. Hence the check for existing I'm doing.

Binding Picker to enum value in SwiftData struct
I have a SwiftData @Model class that has a var of Media. enum Media: String, CaseIterable, Identifiable, Codable { case dvd = "DVD" case bluray = "Blu-ray" case bluray4k = "Blu-ray 4k" var id:String { self.rawValue } } In one of my views, I'm trying to show a Picker with the enum values, and then bind the @Model's field to the Picker's selection. I've been trying all kinds of things from suggesting I'm finding online. Here's a poorly pasted version of what my last attempt looks like (I'm sure I have the wrong number of closing curly brackets, but just ignore that): struct DetailView: View { @Binding var item:Item; // The @Model class. @State private var selectedMedia:Media = .dvd; var body:some View { Picker("Media", selection:$selectedMedia) { ForEach(Media.allCases, id:\.self) { media in Text(media.rawValue); } } .labelsHidden() .onAppear() { selectedMedia = item.media; } .onChange(of:selectedMedia) { oldValue, newValue in item.media = selectedMedia; } } } What's a good way to make this work? Am I going to have to use a custom formatter of some type, bind the Picker to a string, and convert the selected value with the formatter?

SwiftUI design options needed
OK, I'm going to try SwiftUI one more time. Every other time I've tried it I've run into major blockages that prevented it from being usable. So far I've code up this basic design (see screenshot at end). It's a common thing: Filters in the left sidebar, filtered assets in the center list (ignore the temp IDs for debugging purposes), and a detail view of the selected asset on the right. I have no part of the filters figured out yet, so I wouldn't mind getting advice of how to use that to filter the SwiftData. It's currently just using the common @Query to get all the items into a var of the main ContentView. As for the asset list and detail view, my current layout works, but the detail only shows for the first item clicked. Rather than show my SwiftUI code, it might be best to just ask for expert opinions about what is the right way to achieve this design. I want it to run on macOS and iOS. The details field all need to be editable. I'm currently doing this by declaring a struct as such: struct TitledField:View { let title:String; @Binding var value:String; var body:some View { LabeledContent("\(self.title):") { TextField(self.title, text:$value) .labelsHidden(); } } }

How to send a message from menu item in SwiftUI App to ContentView
I'm just not getting it. My app adds a custom Import menu item to the File menu. I want to have it tell the sole ContentView to run the fileImporter. Here's how I have it set up. Changing the showFileImporter variable to supposed to make stuff happen, but it doesn't change. @main struct Blah: App { @State public var contentView = ContentView(); var body:some Scene { WindowGroup { // ContentView() // It started out defining the content like normal, but I saw somewhere that if I declared it as a var up top, then I'd have an actual object that I could tell to do things, like calling the importTerms() method below. self.contentView } .commands { CommandGroup(after:.newItem) { Button("Import…") { contentView.importTerms(); } } } } struct ContentView: View { @State private var showFileImporter = false; var body: some View { VStack { ...stuff... } } .fileImporter(isPresented:$showFileImporter, allowedContentTypes:[.text], allowsMultipleSelection:false) { result in } public func importTerms() { print("\(showFileImporter)"); // ->false showFileImporter = true; print("\(showFileImporter)"); // ->yep, still false } } But it doesn't work. It calls importTerms(), and a breakpoint inside that method does get hit. But it doesn't change the value of showFileImporter and the fileImporter never appears. What kind of weird world has Swift made where setting a variable to true doesn't set it to true and there's no error at build or runtime?

Result of NSMetadataQuery using predicateFromMetadataQueryString: is wrong
I'm trying to get an NSMetadataQuery to work using an NSPredicate build with: [NSPredicate predicateFromMetadataQueryString:@"InRange(kMDItemFSCreationDate,$time.today,$time.today(+1))"] That string is the one I copied from Finder's Get Info window after saving a search of "Created is Today". It at least parses and runs without exceptions, but the results are totally wrong. It only returns files created on 12/31/2000. I've tried dozens of different attempts at building a predicate that uses these $time functions, but they all fail parsing and throw an exception. What I really need to be able to do is build the predicate with a format string, because the attribute is stored in a property: [NSPredicate predicateWithFormat:@"InRange(%K,$time.today,$time.today(+1))", self.attr]; That throws an exception. [NSPredicate predicateFromMetadataQueryString:[NSString stringWithFormat:@"InRange(%@,$time.today,$time.today(+1))", self.attr]]; That does not throw an exception, but it gives the same 12/31/2000 results.

AVAudioEngine startAndReturnError is now failing

Why do random errOSAInternalTableOverflow errors return when running AppleScripts via ScriptingBridge?
We have an app that controls InDesign Desktop and InDesignServer via hundreds of AppleScripts. Some macOS security updates a while back dictated that we start communicating with other apps via ScriptingBridge. We couldn't afford to convert the hundreds of AppleScripts into direct ScriptingBridge nomenclature, so we opted to keep them as is and instead tell the external apps to: [app doScript:<the script text> language:InDesignScLgApplescriptLanguage withArguments:nil undoMode:InDesignESUMScriptRequest undoName:@"blah"] There are a handful of scripts that we did convert to direct ScriptingBridge. There are times (and under the right circumstances, it's repeatable) when a certain script will have run perfectly dozens of times, and then it will throw errOSAInternalTableOverflow. We create a new SBApplication for every job (which could be a single instance of Desktop or the multiple instances of Server). Why is this error happening seemingly randomly? Is there anything we can do to work around or prevent this?

Is calling different SBApplication objects from different threads bad?
Not quite but maybe sorta related to the errOSAInternalTableOverflow problem I asked about in a different thread, this one deals with crashes our app gets (and much more frequently lately after recent OS updates (15.7.3) are OK'd by our IT department). Our app can run multiple jobs concurrently, each in their own NSOperation. Each op creates its own SBApplication instance that controls unique instances of InDesignServer. What I'm seeing recently is lots of crashes happening while multiple ops are calling into ScriptingBridge. Shown at the bottom is one of the stack crawls from one of the threads. I've trimmed all but the last of our code. Other threads have a similar stack crawl. In searching for answers, Google's AI overview mentions "If you must use multiple threads, ensure that each thread creates its own SBApplication instance…" Which is what we do. No thread can reach another thread's SBApplication instance. Is that statement a lie? When is Apple ever going to release an updated screensaver Xcode template?
Since legacyScreenSaver is still the thing running screensavers we make, and it's still buggy, why won't they give us a new template for building screensavers that run in the new engine? And hopefully they don't require them to blend in with the desktop, because most of us don't want that. A wallpaper is a wallpaper, and a screensaver is a screensaver.

Toggling UITextView attributes for spellchecking, smart quotes, etc stops working
I've added some menu actions to toggle various text view attributes named in the subject. The default for Simulator and my devices is to have these features turned on. But I'm finding that toggling them in my menu actions doesn't actually work. Toggling spellchecking or smart quotes (I haven't yet bothered to add more actions and test them) to .off does indeed set the correct value on the UITextView, but the features are still happening when I type (soft or hard keyboards behave the same). What's wrong? Is it simply broken and is caching the initial value or something? 18.4 is being used on my Simulator and my devices. I also tried 18.3.1 in Simulator with the same results.

How to return a UIMenu for read-only UITextView
I have a UITextView being added at runtime to a UIImageView as the result of doing text recognition. It's set to be editable = NO and selectable = YES. When I set the text and select it, it asks the delegate for the menu to display via: textView:editMenuForTextInRange:suggestedActions: The suggested items contains many UIAction and UICommand objects that have private methods or do not have the destructive attribute set, yet they are destructive. Some of these are: promptForReplace: transliterateChinese: _insertDrawing: _showTextFormattingOptions: I need to return a menu that has only non-destructive commands in it. First, why isn't UITextView sending only non-destructive suggested commands when its editable is NO? Second, how can I filter the array of suggested commands when it's impossible to know if they're destructive (as some are missing that attribute)? In addition to that, even non-destructive commands are causing an unrecognized selector exception, such as the Speak command, which it is sending to my view controller instead of to the UITextView, which is the only thing that knows what the text is that it should speak.

Any way to make NSWorkspace's showSearchResultsForQueryString work?
It fails in a sandboxed app. I found a couple suggestions. One was to add a NSAppleEventsUsageDescription pair to the Info.plist so the user would be asked to grant permission for AppleEvents. But that never happens for showSearchResultsForQueryString. The next was to add the com.apple.security.temporary-exception.apple-events entitlement and provide com.apple.finder as the app. This DOES work, but Apple is rejecting my app because of it, even though I've said it's the only way to make showSearchResultsForQueryString work. I'm still waiting for them to tell me how to do it in a more correct way. This is obviously a bug, because an app should be able to use any NSWorkspace method without jumping through security hoops. Has anyone else found a way to make it work and get their app on the App Store?

How does NSFetchRequest compare custom objects?
I have a CoreData-based app that's many years old, so it's been a long time since I've actually dealt with CoreData. Over recent years, I've noticed that fetch requests aren't finding the object I know is in there. The entity is called Folder and has a single attribute named url, which is of type Transformable. The transformer is a custom one that converts a url into a dictionary with 2 keys; one is a security scoped bookmark created from the url, and the other is the original url in case the bookmark fails. The dictionary is then converted to NSData using NSKeyedArchiver securely. The reverseTransformedValue does the opposite; unarchives the data to a dict, attempts to resolve the bookmark back into the url. The fetch request is set up to fetch all Folder objects where: Custom Predicate: url == $THE_URL So is the fetch request comparing the NSData that's stored in the file and comparing that to $THE_URL after running it through the transformer to arrive at an NSData, or is it running each one through the transformer to get the underlying url and comparing those with $THE_URL? Could there be a better way to compare urls in Core Data, when the app is sandboxed and must use security scoped bookmarks?

Need advice for closing subwindows when closing main document window
I have a document class that makes a main window for showing the data. Pieces of that data can be opened in separate subwindows for editing. When the user closes the main window and the document is dirty and the subwindows are dirty, I would like to present UI that asks the user if they want to save the changes in the subwindows (and possibly the main window if I decide to turn off autoSavesInPlace for the document). I've tried a number of possible methods of doing this, but always run into some roadblock: -Overriding shouldCloseWindowController:delegate:shouldCloseSelector:contextInfo: where I would go through the open subwindows and asking and tell them to do their own UI for asking if they should be saved. This is no good because everything returns back to the run loop and the doc would close, leaving the subwindows open with their Save? sheets up. -Making the subwindows inherit from NSEditor and registering them with the document. This looked like it would work, but it caused an infinite loop in my override of commitEditingWithDelegate:didCommitSelector:contextInfo: that I don't understand. I'm probably calling the didCommitSelector wrong because the docs aren't clear and provide no example. -Adding each subwindow's NSWindowController to the document's windowControllers list. I don't recall the problems this caused. Any sage advice about this? Possible examples? The Document is Swift, the subwindows are Cocoa, so examples in either language is fine.

Do I need to lock around every ScriptingBridge call (which is going to severely slow things down)? 0 AE 0x1a7dba8d4 0x1a7d80000 + 239828 1 AE 0x1a7d826d8 AEProcessMessage + 3496 2 AE 0x1a7d8f210 0x1a7d80000 + 61968 3 AE 0x1a7d91978 0x1a7d80000 + 72056 4 AE 0x1a7d91764 0x1a7d80000 + 71524 5 CoreFoundation 0x1a0396a64 __CFRUNLOOP_IS_CALLING_OUT_TO_A_SOURCE0_PERFORM_FUNCTION__ + 28 6 CoreFoundation 0x1a03969f8 __CFRunLoopDoSource0 + 172 7 CoreFoundation 0x1a0396764 __CFRunLoopDoSources0 + 232 8 CoreFoundation 0x1a03953b8 __CFRunLoopRun + 840 9 CoreFoundation 0x1a03949e8 CFRunLoopRunSpecific + 572 10 AE 0x1a7dbc108 0x1a7d80000 + 246024 11 AE 0x1a7d988fc AESendMessage + 4724 12 ScriptingBridge 0x1ecb652ac -[SBAppContext sendEvent:error:] + 80 13 ScriptingBridge 0x1ecb5eb4c -[SBObject sendEvent:id:keys:values:count:] + 216 14 ScriptingBridge 0x1ecb6890c -[SBCommandThunk invoke:] + 376 15 CoreFoundation 0x1a037594c ___forwarding___ + 956 16 CoreFoundation 0x1a03754d0 _CF_forwarding_prep_0 + 96 17 RRD 0x1027fca18 -[AppleScriptHelper runAppleScript:withSubstitutionValues:usingSBApp:] + 1036
