App Store Promo Codes Not Working for Subscriptions on iOS 18
I tried redeeming a promo code for a subscription on iOS 18. It's a yearly subscription (the promo code is for myself in this case). This always worked before. Now on iOS 18 when I redeem the code in the App Store it just spins an activity indicator in the navigation bar for a few seconds and stops. Promo code doesn't redeem. No error message either. Now when I try to redeem the promo code on the Mac App Store I get the following error: "You must redeem this code on a device that supports App name". This error makes sense because the app is iOS/iPadOS only. But the fact that the Mac App Store displays the App name in the error message indicates that the code is valid and should work on iOS, but it does not.

EU Trader Question, How Long Before Apps Removed from EU?
I've been putting off entering my EU "trader status" info. I see this is published on the developer site: "Starting October 16, 2024, developers must provide their trader status to submit new apps or app updates for distribution in the European Union. To comply with the Digital Services Act, go to the Business section by February 17, 2025 to provide your trader status or your app will be removed from the App Store in the EU." So do I have to do this now (today October 16, 2024) to prevent my apps from being removed from the EU App Store (or do I have until February 17, 2025)?

Mac App Store Bug Fix Updates Getting Blocked, Reviewer Sending "App Sandbox Design Guide" Broken Link
My app, which has been on the Mac App Store for many years, has an update being blocked by App review. The only change made is a bug fix (documented in the release notes). First rejection: Said I was using an entitlement I didn't need. My response: I explained the feature that required the entitlement. App goes back in review and gets rejected again for completely different reasons. They don't want me to write files in my App Sandbox container and instead write them in a more traditional user facing location (like in the Documents folder). They keep sending me a link to the "App Sandbox Design Guide" in the Documentation Archive (which appears to redirect to a different page?) and are quoting a section that is nowhere to be found in the link they send me (on the page I'm redirected to). I keep explaining to them that I cannot write outside my sandbox container and that this isn't my choice. And they keep rejecting my app and sending me a broken link to the "App Sandbox design guide." It isn't my fault that I have to write to my sandboxed container by default or have a non-functioning app. In any case, I don't understand why a bug fix update is being held up and I'm getting some vague instructions about possibly having to design some long winded explanation to the user in some ridiculously complicated onboarding process about choosing a folder in a save panel, why you have to choose the folder in the save panel (because I need your permission), OR just quit the app you just bought because it'll otherwise do nothing if you don't choose a folder in the save panel. Users got enough panels to deal with. At the very least App review shouldn't send me broken links from the Documentation Archive. So I'm using my sandbox container by default (because by default I cannot do anything else). I've been doing this for a long time and I don't understand why it is suddenly a problem. What is my sandboxed container for if I can't write to it? If documentation such as the "App Sandbox Design Guide" is still relevant and important why is it being archived anyway ? The link redirects I cannot find the section the reviewer is citing in the provided link. I don't mind being asked to do something to improve the app but I've wasted a lot of time trying to satisfy app review in the past only to misinterpret what they actually are asking me to do causing more wasted time and energy and not getting a whole lot in return. And I don't think it's fair to block a bug fix update.

UIDeferredMenuElement With Uncached Provider Not Working on Mac Catalyst. Uncached provider block never called and menu displays as "Loading"
I'm trying to create a dynamic menu on Mac Catalyst. Mac App with Python Embedded: Sandbox Blocks Python Script from Running Only in Release Mode?
I have an XPC service that embeds Python. It executes a python script on behalf of the main app. The app and xpc service are sandboxed. All seems to work just fine in the development environment but the script fails in the released version. I disabled writing pycache by setting the PYTHONDONTWRITEBYTECODE environment variable because pycache tries to write inside my app bundle which fails (I believe I can redirect the pycache directory with PYTHONPYCACHEPREFIX and may experiment with that later). Specifically this line fails in the release version only (not from Xcode): PyObject *pModule = PyImport_Import(moduleNameHere); if (pModuleOwnedRef == NULL) { // this is null in release mode only. } Any ideas what can be going wrong? Thanks in advance.

AVSpeechSynthesizer Broken on iOS 17
I just upgraded to iOS 17 and it looks like AVSpeechSynthesizer is now broken. I noticed when feeding certain strings to AVSpeechUtterance it just dies flat out stops after only speaking a portion of the string. For example I fed it a string of approx. 1200 words and it speaks up to around 300 words or so and then just stops. The synthesizer delegate method -speechSynthesizer:didFinishSpeechUtterance: is called when this happens, as if this is supposed to be the end even though it is not even close to being finishes. Was working fine on iOS 16. FWIW I create the AVSpeechUtterance with -initWithString:

NSWindow Suddenly Closes After NSTextField Ends Editing (By Clicking into Another NSTextField)
Configuration: I have a NSTextField (multiline) inside an NSWindow. I have another NSTextField (single line) inside an NSBox (which is in the same window). The multiline text field is first responder and is editing. I click on the single line text field inside the NSBox to edit that one. The NSWindow just closes. This is on Sonoma 14.2.1. I subclassed NSWindow and override the close method and put a breakpoint. Is the Hardened Runtime required for Mac Apps Now?
I just tried submitting an app to be notarized. This app is actually only used by me internally (but I have other apps this question would be relevant to) and I can't submit for notarization. I get the following error: "Hardened Runtime is not enabled." Is the Hardened Runtime now required? I know it used to be optional (I believe the last time I submitted an app update a few months ago outside the Mac App Store I got no such error).

OSLog Line Numbers & Source File Only Shown On Mouse Hover in Tiny Text?
For awhile I've wrapped OSLog in my own macros to include the line number and source file the logging statement originates from in debug mode because OSLog didn't include that info in console output (until recently). Now I noticed the source code file and line number of the logging statement isn't being shown (I have all the metadata switches turned on in Xcode's console "Metadata Options" popover). Then I realized it is being shown, only on mouse hover over the logging statement in very tiny text. The text is barely readable (on mouse hover). Why would viewing the line number require me to move the mouse cursor over a logging statement? It doesn't look pretty at all (hiding information behind mouse hover) and even if it did look pretty, this is the console for programmers and we don't care about such nonsense.

Use prebuilt dylib built for macOS in macCatalyst?
Is there a way to link a prebuilt dylib that was built for the 'macOS' platform on Mac Catalyst without being warned by Xcode? Generally it would be better to just recompile for Mac Catalyst but this is a third party library and they have a complicated build system with dozens of dependencies that doesn't support Mac Catalyst as of now (although they have iOS and Mac 'regular'). So I would have to spend quite a bit of time trying to sort through their build system to make a Catalyst version myself. The library uses no platform specific UI code and I'm fairly certain that macOS build would work just fine on Mac Catalyst without any changes since it isn't UI related at all. It seems to work fine (apart from Xcode warning me about linking a .dylib built for macOS on Mac Catalyst). I could shim all this away in a NSBundle that is aware of the AppKit world but then I have to make all method calls to the third party framework on Mac Catalyst through the bundle and it would separate my iOS and Catalyst code relying on the same implementation which isn't great. Is there a way I could just replace the 'macOS' platform in the .dylib with macCatalyst to get rid of the warning?

Mac Catalyst Menu Bar/Toolbar Actions Not Validating Properly After Changing Active Windows
I have a multiple window Mac Catalyst app. I'm using a NSToolbar and the menu bar via UIMenuBuilder. I noticed after changing windows the menu bar isn't always validating properly. For example my app implements "Undo" and "redo". So I can reproduce the issue using these steps: Perform an action that can be undone. Open a new window. This new window has its own undo manager. In the Menu bar select Edit -> Undo Undo validates even though the current window has nothing on its local undo stack. If invoked undo is performed on the inactive window which definitely seems wrong. The same thing sometimes happens in reverse (that is, undo doesn't validate when it should after switching windows). This also happens with other actions after switching windows. Sometimes I can get the actions to validate by hitting the Tab key to move focus then shift tabbing back, which seems to force proper lookup in the responder chain (but sometimes that doesn't work). It seems that Catalyst is losing track of the real active window/window scene for some reason and is validating actions on the wrong window scene. Anyone experience this and know where I could be going wrong and/or know of a possible workaround? I tried subclassing UIApplication and implementing the methods there (and then forwarding them to the active UIWindowScene). However this doesn't work, the wrong window scene has its activationState set to UISceneActivationStateForegroundActive when the problem occurs.

Is it possible to convert a model trained with CRFSuite to NLModel / CoreML?
I was wondering if there is a quick way to convert a model trained with the open source CRFSuite for use with NLTagger? It seems like retraining should be possible but was wondering if automatic conversion was supported?

AVSpeechSynthesizer Broken on iOS 17
I just upgraded to iOS 17 and it looks like AVSpeechSynthesizer is now broken. I noticed when feeding certain strings to AVSpeechUtterance it just dies flat out stops after only speaking a portion of the string. For example I fed it a string of approx. 1200 words and it speaks up to around 300 words or so and then just stops. The synthesizer delegate method -speechSynthesizer:didFinishSpeechUtterance: is called when this happens, as if this is supposed to be the end even though it is not even close to being finishes. Was working fine on iOS 16. FWIW I create the AVSpeechUtterance with -initWithString:

NSWindow Suddenly Closes After NSTextField Ends Editing (By Clicking into Another NSTextField)
Configuration: I have a NSTextField (multiline) inside an NSWindow. I have another NSTextField (single line) inside an NSBox (which is in the same window). The multiline text field is first responder and is editing. I click on the single line text field inside the NSBox to edit that one. The NSWindow just closes. This is on Sonoma 14.2.1. I subclassed NSWindow and override the close method and put a breakpoint. Is the Hardened Runtime required for Mac Apps Now?
I just tried submitting an app to be notarized. This app is actually only used by me internally (but I have other apps this question would be relevant to) and I can't submit for notarization. I get the following error: "Hardened Runtime is not enabled." Is the Hardened Runtime now required? I know it used to be optional (I believe the last time I submitted an app update a few months ago outside the Mac App Store I got no such error).

OSLog Line Numbers & Source File Only Shown On Mouse Hover in Tiny Text?
For awhile I've wrapped OSLog in my own macros to include the line number and source file the logging statement originates from in debug mode because OSLog didn't include that info in console output (until recently). Now I noticed the source code file and line number of the logging statement isn't being shown (I have all the metadata switches turned on in Xcode's console "Metadata Options" popover). Then I realized it is being shown, only on mouse hover over the logging statement in very tiny text. The text is barely readable (on mouse hover). Why would viewing the line number require me to move the mouse cursor over a logging statement? It doesn't look pretty at all (hiding information behind mouse hover) and even if it did look pretty, this is the console for programmers and we don't care about such nonsense.

Use prebuilt dylib built for macOS in macCatalyst?
Is there a way to link a prebuilt dylib that was built for the 'macOS' platform on Mac Catalyst without being warned by Xcode? Generally it would be better to just recompile for Mac Catalyst but this is a third party library and they have a complicated build system with dozens of dependencies that doesn't support Mac Catalyst as of now (although they have iOS and Mac 'regular'). So I would have to spend quite a bit of time trying to sort through their build system to make a Catalyst version myself. The library uses no platform specific UI code and I'm fairly certain that macOS build would work just fine on Mac Catalyst without any changes since it isn't UI related at all. It seems to work fine (apart from Xcode warning me about linking a .dylib built for macOS on Mac Catalyst). I could shim all this away in a NSBundle that is aware of the AppKit world but then I have to make all method calls to the third party framework on Mac Catalyst through the bundle and it would separate my iOS and Catalyst code relying on the same implementation which isn't great. Is there a way I could just replace the 'macOS' platform in the .dylib with macCatalyst to get rid of the warning?

Mac Catalyst Menu Bar/Toolbar Actions Not Validating Properly After Changing Active Windows
I have a multiple window Mac Catalyst app. I'm using a NSToolbar and the menu bar via UIMenuBuilder. I noticed after changing windows the menu bar isn't always validating properly. For example my app implements "Undo" and "redo". So I can reproduce the issue using these steps: Perform an action that can be undone. Open a new window. This new window has its own undo manager. In the Menu bar select Edit -> Undo Undo validates even though the current window has nothing on its local undo stack. If invoked undo is performed on the inactive window which definitely seems wrong. The same thing sometimes happens in reverse (that is, undo doesn't validate when it should after switching windows). This also happens with other actions after switching windows. Sometimes I can get the actions to validate by hitting the Tab key to move focus then shift tabbing back, which seems to force proper lookup in the responder chain (but sometimes that doesn't work). It seems that Catalyst is losing track of the real active window/window scene for some reason and is validating actions on the wrong window scene. Anyone experience this and know where I could be going wrong and/or know of a possible workaround? I tried subclassing UIApplication and implementing the methods there (and then forwarding them to the active UIWindowScene). However this doesn't work, the wrong window scene has its activationState set to UISceneActivationStateForegroundActive when the problem occurs.
