Migrating from ObservableObject to Observable in SwiftUI but still run on older OS
I prepare an app to migrate from ObservableObject to Observable, from EnvironmentObject to Environment(MyClass.self) and so so forth. That works OK, very simple. But, that forces to run on macOS 14 or more recent. So I would like to have it conditionally, such as: if macOS 14 available @Environment(ActiveConfiguration.self) var activeConfiguration: ActiveConfiguration otherwise @EnvironmentObject var activeConfiguration: ActiveConfiguration The same for the class declaration: if macOS 14 available @Observable class ActiveConfiguration { var config = Configuration() } otherwise class ActiveConfiguration : ObservableObject { @Published var config = Configuration() } Is there a way to achieve this (I understand it is not possible through extensions of Macros, as we can do for modifiers) ? Could I define 2 classes for ActiveConfiguration, but then what about @Environment ?

SafariBookmarksSyncAgent quits unexpectedly
Since recently (maybe after updating to Sonoma 14.7.1 - 23H222, but not sure, I get a crash report stating that SafariBookmarksSyncAgent quitted unexpectedly Once acquitted the report, it will reappear 2 minutes later as long as Xcode is open. Configuration: Sonoma 14.7.1 Safari Technology Preview Release 208 (Safari 18.2, WebKit 19621.1.5.1) Xcode 15.3 (15E204a) That seems to be a known problem. Question: Is it due to MacOS version ? To Xcode version ? To Safari version ? To webKit version ? Or to simulator, as I gat an AegirPoster crash (as described here: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/77083912/macbook-pro-crashes-when-using-simulator-aegirposter-process) I read that I would need to restart some devices (eg, iPhone). That seems to temporarily solve the problem Here is a part of the report: Incident Identifier: 0D2456DF-5801-41D6-8294-2BF442224913 CrashReporter Key: 4DE33529-174E-32C5-D8A8-26FE128BE16B Hardware Model: Mac14,12 Process: SafariBookmarksSyncAgent [38972] Path: /Volumes/VOLUME/*/SafariSupport.bundle/SafariBookmarksSyncAgent Identifier: com.apple.SafariBookmarksSyncAgent Version: 8614 (8614.1.25.0.17) Code Type: ARM-64 (Native) Role: Unspecified Parent Process: launchd_sim [28070] Coalition: com.apple.CoreSimulator.SimDevice.0058D576-D9FF-4169-8437-D0A24C923500 [9832] Responsible Process: SimulatorTrampoline [1116] Date/Time: 2024-11-27 15:19:42.4908 +0100 Launch Time: 2024-11-27 15:19:42.4610 +0100 OS Version: macOS 14.7.1 (23H222) Release Type: User Report Version: 104 Exception Type: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGSEGV) Exception Subtype: KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS at 0x0000000204476580 Exception Codes: 0x0000000000000001, 0x0000000204476580 VM Region Info: 0x204476580 is not in any region. No more simulators showing in Xcode
I sometimes use Xcode 14.2. Recently, I have an issue with simulators: on some SwiftUI project, the simulator list is empty. I created a new project. I see the complete list of simulators, but when running for a simulator, it fails with following diag; Same error with UIKit project. Details Unable to boot the Simulator. Can some of those simulator files be safely deleted ?
When looking ay space used by system, I found that AssetsV2 (in System/Library) account for 270 GB. In this folder, 3 account for 260 GB and are apparently related to Xcode simulators: Content is a bit cryptic. Does it relate to some specific apps I compiled and ran on simulator ? Or is it related to older versions of Xcode I keep on the Mac ? How to know what each forlder relates to ? Is it safe to remove ?

Crash in Swift 6 when using UNUserNotification
After porting code to Swift 6 (Xcode 16.4), I get a consistent crash (on simulator) when using UNUserNotificationServiceConnection It seems (searching on the web) that others have met the same issue. Is it a known Swift6 bug ? Or am I misusing UNUserNotification ? I do not have the crash when compiling on Xcode 26 ß5, which hints at an issue in Xcode 16.4. Crash log: Thread 10 Queue : com.apple.usernotifications.UNUserNotificationServiceConnection.call-out (serial) As far as I can tell, it seems error is when calling nonisolated func userNotificationCenter(_ center: UNUserNotificationCenter, willPresent notification: UNNotification, withCompletionHandler completionHandler: @escaping (UNNotificationPresentationOptions) -> Void) I had to declare non isolated to solve a compiler error. Main actor-isolated instance method 'userNotificationCenter(_:didReceive:withCompletionHandler:)' cannot be used to satisfy nonisolated requirement from protocol 'UNUserNotificationCenterDelegate' I was advised to: Add 'nonisolated' to 'userNotificationCenter(_:didReceive:withCompletionHandler:)' to make this instance method not isolated to the actor I filed a bug report: Aug 10, 2025 at 2:43 PM – FB19519575

Where to find sample code for SB2420 compliance and questions
I'm struggling to implement required code for SB2420 compliance. I try to learn on a very simple use case. the app is UIKit Build in Xcode 26.2 it displays a single Hello view with a button that will simply show a "Good day" label. I assume the app will be rated 4+. I tried the following code, using available information in Xcode (limited): import UIKit import DeclaredAgeRange // other import needed ? class ViewController: UIViewController { @IBOutlet weak var welcomeLabel: UILabel! // initially hidden override func viewDidLoad() { super.viewDidLoad() // Do any additional setup after loading the view. } func testAgeRange() -> Bool { if !isEligibleForAgeFeatures { // Not found. Which import needed ? return true // Not called from Texas } // Following code from Xcode doc… do { let response = try await AgeRangeService.shared.requestAgeRange(ageGates: 13, 15, 18) // Compiler Error: Missing argument for parameter 'in' in call // Can I add the 4 gate ? guard let lowerBound = response.lowerBound else { // Allow access to under 13 features. return false } var ok = false if lowerBound >= 18 { // Not needed ? // Allow access to 18+ features. ok = true } else if lowerBound >= 15 { // Not needed ? // Allow access to 15+ features. ok = true } else if lowerBound >= 13 { // Not needed ? // Require parental consent ? // Allow access to 13+ features. ok = true // if consent OK } else { // Require parental consent ? // Show age-appropriate content ok = true // if consent OK } return ok // Authorized for all 4+ } catch AgeRangeService.Error.notAvailable { // No age range provided. return false } } func executeStart() { welcomeLabel.isHidden = false } @IBAction func start(_ sender: UIButton) { if #available(iOS 26.0, *) { if testAgeRange() { // Need to test for parental control here ? } else { // Alert and exit the app ? } } else { // do nothing ? Can we run the app ? } executeStart() } } The logic would be: before allowing action with the start button, check is it IOS 26+ so that we can call API if so, is verification needed (Texas SB2420) if not, we can proceed if required, test age range As app is 4+, all ranges should be OK But need to test parental control Now, many pending questions in code: line 14: get an error: Cannot find 'isEligibleForAgeFeatures' in scope line 19: I used the documentation sample for AgeRangeService, but get a Compiler Error: Missing argument for parameter 'in' in call line 35: how to implement parental control ? In addition, in the metadata of the app, should I declare that parental control ? Age verification? Mechanism for confirming that a person's age meets the age requirement for accessing content or services As there is no restriction on age, is it required ? Any help welcomed as well as link to a comprehensive tutorial.

Do we still need to comply with SB2420 on Jan 1st for distributing apps in Texas ?
According to this news, we don't need anymore (at least temporarily): https://www.macrumors.com/2025/12/23/texas-app-store-law-blocked/ A Texas federal judge today blocked an App Store age verification law that was set to go into effect on January 1, 2026, which means Apple may not have to support the changes after all. Hope we shall get very rapidly more information from Apple.

Interesting graph in AppStore Connect I cannot replay
I got accidentally this graph whilst playing with the periods of display in AppStoreConnect Trends hourly graph on several days But when I try to recall it, no way. If I select a multi days period, hourly graph is not available. Someone has an idea how to get it again ? Or was I lucky to profit of a forums bug ? Here are the settings for the graph I cannot select again.

Whimsical tooltips behaviour in popover (Appkit)
In this app I use tooltips extensively. They work perfectly well, except in a popover where they may appear or not (just some flash and immediately disappear). In the popover there are 12 colour buttons, each with its own tracking area and 3 control buttons, with their tracking areas. Here when it works, hovering over "C" button or "Annuler" button: But then, when I move to another colour button, a few 2 or 3 may work, but most don't display their tooltip at all. I know that the tooltip is set because I replicate the message in a help line at the bottom of the screen and this line always update: Let messageForColor = "Choisir la couleur…" if button.isEnabled { // show tooltip button.toolTip = messageForColor } else { button.toolTip = nil } if button.isEnabled { // Shows helpline at the bottom of screen button.helpMessage = messageForColor } Maybe it comes from some useDefault (I modified NSInitialTool TipDelay and I'm not sure I have reset to the default value) I noted that if I wait for 10 seconds or so (keeping the popover opened), everything seems to work properly again. Just as if there was some lengthy initialisation going on. So questions: Is there a known issue of Tooltips in a popover ? Are there other parameters to set in userDefaults to avoid immediate disparition of the tooltip in popover ? How to reset the factory setting for the UserDefaults in the app ?

How to avoid this thread priority inversions ?
Context: Xcode 16.4, Appkit In a windowController, I need to create and send a mouseDown event (newMouseDownEvent). I create the event with: let newMouseDownEvent = NSEvent.mouseEvent( with: .leftMouseDown, location: clickPoint, // all other fields I also need to make window key and front, otherwise the event is not handled.   func simulateMouseDown() { self.window?.makeFirstResponder(self.window) self.calepinFullView.perform(#selector(NSResponder.self.mouseDown(with:)), with: newMouseDownEvent!) }   As I have to delay the call( 0.5 s), I use asyncAfter: DispatchQueue.main.asyncAfter(deadline: .now() + 0.5, qos: .userInteractive) { self.simulateMouseDown() }   It works as intended, but that generates the following (purple) warning at runtime: [Internal] Thread running at User-interactive quality-of-service class waiting on a lower QoS thread running at Default quality-of-service class. Investigate ways to avoid priority inversions I have tried several solutions, change qos in await: DispatchQueue.main.asyncAfter(deadline: .now() + 0.5, qos: ..default) call from a DispatchQueue let interactiveQueue = DispatchQueue.global(qos: .userInteractive) interactiveQueue.async { self.window?.makeFirstResponder(self.window) self.calepinFullView.perform(#selector(NSResponder.self.mouseDown(with:)), with: newMouseDownEvent!) } But that's worse, it crashes with the following error: FAULT: NSInternalInconsistencyException: -[HIRunLoopSemaphore wait:] has been invoked on a secondary thread; the problem is likely in a much shallower frame in the backtrace; { NSAssertFile = "HIRunLoop.mm"; NSAssertLine = 709; }   How to eliminate the priority inversion risk (not just silencing the warning) ?

NSTableCellView does not colour its background correctly
In an NSTableView (Appkit), I need to colour a cell background when it is selected. That works OK, except that the colour does not span the full cell width, nor even the text itself: The tableView structure is very basic: I see there is a TextCell at the end that cannot be deleted. What is this ? And the colouring as well: func tableView(_ tableView: NSTableView, viewFor tableColumn: NSTableColumn?, row: Int) -> NSView? { let p = someDataSource[row] if let cellView = tableView.makeView(withIdentifier: NSUserInterfaceItemIdentifier(rawValue: "Cell"), owner: self) { (cellView as! NSTableCellView).textField?.stringValue = p if selected[row] { (cellView as! NSTableCellView).backgroundColor = theLightBlueColor } else { (cellView as! NSTableCellView).backgroundColor = .clear } return cellView } } I've tried to change size constraints in many ways, to no avail. For instance, I changed Layout to Autoresising : I tried to change TableCellView size to 170 vs 144: Or increase tableColum Width. I have looked at what other object in the NSTableView hierarchy should be coloured without success. Nothing works. What am I missing ?

Referencing IBOutlet to its class or to file's owner
In this Mac App, I have an IBOutlet (which is defined as instance of a subclass of NSView). When I connect the IBOutlet to the code, referencing as file's owner, it works OK. But if I reference to the class, it crashes, when I access a specific IBOutlet (but other IBOutlets are accessed just before it without crashing).. The IBOutlet turnPageControl is defined as instance of subclass of NSView. Note: I have implemented several init methods: override init(window: NSWindow!) { } required init?(coder: (NSCoder?)) { } // Yes, (NSCoder?) convenience init(parameters) { // loading from nib } override func windowDidLoad() { super.windowDidLoad() // Access turnpageControl I get those calls before crash: init(window:) init(parameters:) init(window:) windowDidLoad() -> crash inside on accessing the IBOutlet for turnPageControl.isHidden = true Is there any reason to this ?

Putting 2 existing pdf pages side by side (half size) in a new pdf
In Swift, iOS, I have a pdf file. I want to take the pages 2 by 2 and put them side by side, on the new page. For this, I have to scale initial pages half size and rotate .pi/2. I managed to achieve this by converting pdf pages to UIImages and using a UIGraphicsImageRenderer. But with a critical loss of resolution. I've tried improving the resolution by creating images as jpegData(withCompressionQuality: 1.0), to no avail. So I would need to work directly on the pdf pages using CGPDFDocument format. The code structure is as follows, to insert a single scaled page: for iPage in … { if let _page = theCGPdfDocument.page(at: 1) { var _pageRect: CGRect = _page.getBoxRect(CGPDFBox.mediaBox) writeContextInDestination!.beginPage(mediaBox: &_pageRect) // translate to compensate for the flip caused displacement writeContextInDestination!.translateBy(x: _pageRect.size.width, y: _pageRect.size.height) Scale (-1, -1) // rotate 180° // add rotate as needed writeContextInDestination!.scaleBy(x: -1, y: -1) writeContextInDestination!.clip(to: _pageRect) writeContextInDestination!.drawPDFPage(_page) writeContextInDestination!.endPage() // end the current page } } writeContextInDestination!.closePDF() But I do not succeed in inserting the drawing of the second page. I've tried repeating lines 7 to 11 for a second page at line 13. No success. What is the direction to look for ?

Where are the forums heading to ?
Since a few weeks, I feel the content of the forums is less and less interesting. Probably 80% (not to say 90%) of the posts are about complains about review process, a serious question for those who have a problem but questions on which other developers can do absolutely nothing even if they bothered. Forum is becoming a wailing wall. With such a trend (but what to do to change it ?), forums will soon be of no interest at all, which is really unfortunate for the developers community.
